Introduction

Less than 5 hours drive through the Carpathian Mountains from the border in Barvinko to the border in Petea, historically once a neighbor, today mentally and culturally a European country close to us - Romania. Although it is still one of the least visited countries in Europe, it is extremely attractive for those seeking color and beautiful nature. Here everyone will find something for themselves - atmospheric and colorful villages, Polish traces in Bukovina, historical lands of Moldavia, Wallachia, Transylvania with fortresses, forts, towns, the Danube Delta, the warm Black Sea with sandy beaches and close to 50% of the entire Carpathian range with unbelievable landscapes crossed by really winding roads... Romania is a real paradise for tourists and motorcyclists....

A proposal for a week-long motorcycle exploration in Romania, along trails that are not only asphalt and hardly hotel-based. Although this is not an offroad expedition for professionals, but rather a trip for mature outdoor enthusiasts, it is conducted "via countryside", with trails through rural areas. Recommended for users of touring motorcycles in the "allroad" class (motorcycle SUVs of any brand). The marked route will lead for the most part along rural roads, local roads, even potholes, sections without asphalt, field paved, often gravel, occasionally forest. In a word, any type of surface with the exclusion of deserts, forest thickets and swamps. An expedition for a group of 7-14 people and a maximum of 10 motorcycles through the most beautiful scenic regions of Romania with tents in luggage...The program is almost austere, for a while only luxurious - 9 days of adult expedition fun, with overnight stays "on the ground under a cloud", 1 night in a luxury 4* SPA hotel and 1 night in the crowns of century-old trees.

WHAT IS THE PROPOSAL AND FOR WHOM?

It's not an expedition, but rather a relatively easy trip, although it's guided by trails that Google Maps doesn't usually guide. The program includes quite a few local roads of varying surface and quality, both in lowland and mountainous terrain, roads marked with a white line on maps and sometimes so thin as to be almost non-existent. Although they are mediocre roads and even roadless in sections, they lead through inhabited areas and not deserted refuges, making the trip touristy and safe.

A proposition for any owner of a motorcycle in the Allroad class (a so-called motorcycle SUV), capable of traversing roads with any type of surface. Basic level off-road riding experience (familiarity with riding off-tarmac on roads with unbound pavement) will be very necessary, although not essential - the program provides for the possibility that participants may bypass more difficult road sections, or change the program in case of very adverse weather and road conditions.

Our goal is mainly natural treasures, just a little bit of history and architecture in 2 of Romania's most attractive tourist lands: 1) Marmarosh (Maramureş) - a true refuge of folklore, whose landscape is made up of gentle mountain ridges and traditional wooden houses, gates and churches with soaring towers, whose uniqueness has been recognized by its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, 2) Transylvania (Transylvania) - historical land, tucked into the Carpathian fold, surrounded by an aura of mystery, with numerous well-preserved monuments, with tangible evidence of the intermingling of many cultures, religions and nationalities, as well as magnificent nature. On the list of must see - Sighișoara (Segișoara), Viscrii, the Transfogaras Road, Transalpina and Apuseni.

The event is a tourist trip, so by definition it is geared towards exploring regions, places and local culture - an enjoyable and relaxing trip. There are no elements of stunt in the event, including rivalry and competition. Participants form a group, ride in a group, return in a group.

Czas approx. 5 hours (+ stops)
Trasa 140-200 km

A day of real exploration of Marmarosh.

The region that many travelers call the real Romania undoubtedly has little to offer a world tainted by foreign cultures... A region bypassed by the trade routes of medieval-developing Europe, it has retained its original - and shaped over many centuries - character. A region of wood and woodcarving craftsmanship of the kind few stand for,
Unfortunately, wood, although a durable building material, is extremely susceptible to the heat of fire. What has survived to this day bears a 17th century pedigree, probably due to the last Tartar invasions marked by fire and sword.

The culture of the region is extremely original, with specific elements that set it apart from other regions of the country. Maramureş is a region of true refuge of folklore, whose landscape is co-created by gentle mountain ridges and traditional wooden houses, gates and Orthodox churches with soaring towers, and whose uniqueness has been recognized by several entries on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Unusually colorful, atmospheric Romanian villages and warm-hearted people.
That's what we'll see during our explorations today (and tomorrow), although the roads we'll take are not insignificant - certainly some sections will provide us with unforgettable experiences.

In the evening, in Breb itself, we can spend time in an atmospheric pub in the center of an equally atmospheric Romanian village lost in time....

DAY 4
Breb Poienile Izei Mocod Sovata

PLAN OF THE DAY:

  • 8:30 departure for the road, we leave the trail of wooden Orthodox churches, although on the way we will pass by one more, the oldest one
  • The oldest Orthodox church on the route dedicated to St. Paraskeva in Poienile Izei from 1604
  • travel along local 186 to national 17C
  • Take national 17C to Mocod and exit to local 172
  • transfer to Sovata
  • Catering:/-/D
  • accommodation: 4* hotel in Sovata
Czas approx. 5 hours (+stops)
Trasa approx. 250 km

In Romania's Târnava Mică River Valley, at the foot of the Gurghiului Mountains, lies one of Romania's most famous spas. Sovata is located in the Szekler region, which is probably why the place is popular with Hungarian-speaking tourists, and why there are probably many signs in that language informing visitors about the attractions. To arrive in the early afternoon and get some rest before the next leg of the trip is our plan for today.

Tonight we will spend the night in a comfortable and even, relatively to previous places, luxurious hotel in Novata, taking advantage of local attractions and spas.

Today we also had dinner together at a restaurant. For a while we return to the luxuries of civilization 🙂

Built between 1970 and 1974 at the behest of then Communist Romanian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu, it replaced existing forest ducts and mountain trails. The Transfogaraska route passes through the Fogaras Mountains, the highest Carpathian range in Romania. It connects Transylvania with Wallachia. The northern route starts in Transylvania, near Sibiu (we'll start there), follows serpentines through the peak itself at an altitude of 2,035 meters above sea level, and then descends on the other side of the Carpathian Mountains, in the town of Curtea de Arges in Wallachia. Today's plan includes only part of the route and an overnight stay somewhere in the mountains, in a picturesque location.

DAY 6
DN7C Transfogaraska DN67C Transalpina

PLAN OF THE DAY:

Czas approx. 7 hours (+stops)
Trasa approx. 290 km

The destination for today is the scenic and highest-altitude DN67C route called Transalpina.

Transalpina (national road marked 67C) - currently an extremely scenic and entirely paved road, running almost exactly south through the central part of the country. Its total length is similar to that of the Transfogaraska (about 150 km) and it is the highest circular road in Romania - at the Urdele pass its altitude is 2145 meters above sea level.

It connects the village of Ciocadia near Novaci in the historic land of Wallachia with Sebeș in Transylvania, crossing from south to north the main ridge of the Parâng Mountains (the second-highest mountain range in the Romanian Carpathians) in the Southern Carpathians.

The road is also one of the oldest in Romania - its origins (the beginnings of the route) date back to the Dacian Wars, i.e. the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, when the Romans laid out a route for their legions through here. Adapted again for transportation purposes at the turn of the 18th/19th century during Austrian rule , expanded during World War I by the Germans, improved by the Kingdom of Romania in the interwar years (pompously opened with the name of "royal route" pinned on it), kept in good condition for military purposes by the Germans during World War II, fell into complete ruin after the Romanian revolution in 1989.

Renovated, asphalted, it has been an attraction not only for motorcyclists since 2013.

Today's plan included a sizable portion of the route, the most spectacular one from Novaci to Lake Oașa and an overnight stay somewhere in the Transylvanian Carpathians, in a picturesque location.

Part of the Carpathian Mountains with landscapes as if from an old fairy tale. Mountains, hiking trails, caves, glaciers, villages and... above all, still wild Romania.
